Residential Cross Connection Program
What is a Cross Connection?
A cross connection is a point in a plumbing system where the clean water supply may become contaminated and/or polluted due to backflow unless the proper backflow prevention device is installed. Common examples of cross connections can include:
- Direct connection of a garden hose to a chemical fertilizer sprayer
- A submerged outlet of an irrigation system
- Improper plumbing connected to a boiler heating system
- Water-assisted back-up on a sump pump
Why does the City need to know about Cross Connections?
The City of Grand Ledge is responsible for providing safe drinking water to Grand Ledge residents and businesses. State and Federal Laws (Safe Drinking Water Acts) require that the City of Grand Ledge protect the water supply to the customer’s tap. The Plumbing Code, Michigan Residential Code, and the City of Grand Ledge Code of Ordinances also require that the City verify that cross connections on private plumbing systems do not pose a contamination risk to the public water supply through the enforcement of the Michigan Department of Environment, Great Lakes, and Energy (EGLE) Part 14 Administrative Rules for Cross-Connection Control. Consumers also share in the responsibility for protecting the water supply by properly maintaining their plumbing systems in a safe condition.
City Inspecting for Cross Connections
Beginning late 2024, staff from Hydrocorp (contracted by the City of Grand Ledge) will begin contacting residents via mail to schedule inspections on the interior and exterior of homes for potential cross connections. These inspections are mandated by EGLE.
Any costs associated with the replacement, modification(s), installation, and/or testing of backflow prevention assemblies are the responsibility of the property owner/manager and/or occupant.
You will be notified following the inspection if modification(s) and/or testing of backflow prevention assemblies are necessary. If you have any questions or require additional information, please contact HydroCorp from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. EST Monday through Friday at 1-844-493-7641 or visit their website at hydrocorpinc.com.
